CD Ornament – DIY

The other day I made coasters with a CD case, today the actual CD is transformed into an ornament.  This simple DIY can be achieved with everyday materials and cheap finds from a craft store, jewelry box, closet etc.  A CD is almost entirely plastic, paintable, and flat so your options are endless.  Here’s what you need:

Easy to find materials

Supplies:

-Scissors

-Duct or transparent tape

-Wrappable material (thin tinsel, yarns, boas, cord, ribbon, tulle, socks, old t-shirts,string, strung beads or pearls)

-Ornament hooks

-Embellishments (flat back jewels, beads, old earrings/jewelry, glitter, bows, small ornaments)

-Craft glue (the more transparent the better)

-Old cd’s

Instructions:

-Using the existing inner circle for reference, cut a larger circle in the center of the CD.

-Seal your initial cut point with silver or transparent tape.  Silver duct tape works well as it matches the coating on the cd.  By taping down the first cut, your materials easily move through the hole without snagging. Tape also covers any sins made when trying to cut a clean circle – use it to hide those boo boos.  A bigger center hole also creates a better wreath like design and keeps materials from looking too bulky. Always keeping in mind the scale of the CD when conceptualizing your design.

-Loop material to desired thickness around the CD, layering and creating volume as you go.

-Glue down material or tuck inside of a layer – the neater you are the more symmetry on both sides of the CD

-Decorate as desired

-Place ornament hook through material and hang on tree

Design Ideas

I can’t shut my brain off thinking about how many ways you can go with this DIY.  Below are a few:

-Peppermint candy wreaths made with any red and white materials…red nylons anyone???

-Three CD’s glued vertically to a long wide ribbon for holiday door decor

-Wrapped beads and old jewelry for a vintage ornament

-Spray painted stripes

-Daisy chained ribbons from your ribbon morgue

Happy crafting folks!

Peaceful wishes,
